NAME: Tomoe
CANON: Kamisama Hajimemashita
AGE: 600+ (appears late teens/early 20s)
CANON POINT: Post-Ch. 28
HISTORY: wiki
PERSONALITY:
While he may be tame now compared to what he once was, Tomoe is first and foremost a youkai. He is a proud creature who holds himself above mere mortals, and even above those of a similar station to him such as fellow familiars, even those that were created divine. He boasts about his strengths, he gloats and taunts his enemies when he has the upper hand, and he doesn't take defeat lightly. Even in the more domestic realm of his familiar duties, he's still an arrogant bastard, and he constantly reminds Nanami that she should consider herself lucky to have a familiar as amazing as him, because she's a weak human and a pitiful excuse for a god. He's also incredibly vain, and he places a great deal of importance on appearances and reputation, which extends not just to himself but also anything that might reflect on him, such as Nanami or his master's shrine.
Once upon a time, Tomoe wandered as he pleased and slaughtered youkai and humans alike for nothing more than the cheap thrill of it, and at times he still feels nostalgic for those days. He remains violent even now, and although his violence tends to be more carefully directed, his love of the fight hasn't changed at all; he enjoys any opportunity he gets to cut down Nanami's enemies, especially given how stifled he is by having to play at being human whenever she takes him into town. There are other holdovers from his life as a wild fox, too, such as a tendency towards hedonism and a lazy sort of apathy towards the world that he falls into when he's left without his purpose as a familiar to focus on.
He may pride himself on his sparkling reputation as a familiar, but Tomoe is not a generous person by nature. As long as a situation doesn't call for his patience, and he has no particular reason to make himself likeable, he's far more inclined to be irritable and short-tempered, that arrogance of his showing through in the way he expects everything to be done just to his liking. He doesn't suffer fools, and he makes that known. When you get to know him beyond a professional level, he's got a sharp tongue and a cold disregard for the feelings of others, never shy about pointing out someone's flaws or criticising their shortcomings. He can be callous to the point of deliberate cruelty, petty, mean-spirited, and underhanded about getting his own way, and he rarely feels any guilt over it.
However, Tomoe has changed quite significantly since his old days, in more ways than just becoming more tame and less prone to murdering humans en masse. He's developed a strong sense of loyalty, for one thing. Although this change began in the period of time that is missing from his memories, when he first fell in love with "Yukiji", it remains: he has fashioned himself into a faithful servant, and he adheres himself stubbornly to a person once they earn his loyalty, the first being Mikage and later Nanami. Because he is not and has never been a particularly social creature or one prone to sharing in any fashion, he is deeply protective of the few things he cares for, often consumed wholly by a person, devoting all his time and thoughts to them. He's also possessive of both people and objects, said to squirrel precious items away as a fox would do, and growing irritated when Nanami's attention is elsewhere.
When he became a familiar, he devoted himself to the art entirely — largely because his vanity would never allow him to be anything less than the best — and he developed an entirely new, domestic side to himself. While he spent his wild fox days as an aimless monster seeking entertainment wherever he could find it, with something to focus on, Tomoe is a dutiful hard-worker without complaint. He takes all his responsibilities very seriously. When interacting with others in a professional capacity, he seems like a completely different person: a familiar who is courteous, respectful, charming, and endlessly patient. He adapts to Nanami's human needs flawlessly, studying how to cook for her and reorganizing his familiar duties to accommodate her other needs such as laundry and school. Even when Mikage abandons him for twenty years without a word, Tomoe never once stops in his duties, taking care of the shrine and writing down the prayers of all who come to ask for the god's blessing. His loyalty, vanity, and dutiful nature combined do make him something of a perfectionist, and whoever his master is suffers for that, but the end result is always something they can be proud of.
The unfortunate downside to his intense focus is that when he loses the object of his loyalty, the backlash hits him hard. At one point, Mikage tells Nanami that youkai experience feelings differently to humans; because of their longevity, they obsess over a single thing, often for centuries at a time. This is demonstrated pretty clearly by Tomoe. Mikage's abrupt disappearance and, although he can't remember it, Yukiji's death, have given Tomoe something of an abandonment complex. Even early on in their partnership before he's developed much affection for her, he finds himself suddenly struck by Nanami simply saying she would be going into town by herself, afraid that he would be abandoned once again by his new master. When Mikage initially took Tomoe in, he could scarcely be around humans because Yukiji's death had cut him so deeply, and he had become fearful of their mortality hurting him again; he laments the same thing with Nanami early on, shaken by the knowledge that something as simple as a fall could be the death of her.
Tomoe is a lonely creature at heart, bereft of the mindless escape he used to find in violence and never quite able to return to that ignorance. He tries to pretend as though he remains the same deep down, and yet he's been undoubtedly tamed by kindness. As he is now, it's a choice between devotion and loneliness, because a life without purpose for him is one without meaning.
SPECIES: Youkai (Fox)

NEW POWER:
Contract Bestowal — Forming a verbal contract with someone temporarily elevates Tomoe's own abilities in order to accomplish what they've ordered him to do. For instance, if the terms of the contract are "protect me", his strength and endurance will be increased to make him better able to carry out that order. At its base level, commands only last up to ten minutes, must be simple, only boost base physical abilities (i.e. he could run a little faster or jump a little higher, not teleport entirely), and Tomoe will be exhausted afterwards, limiting him to one contract per day.POWER REASONING: Servitude is his whole thing. Everything he does is for his master, and since she's not here, this turns his devotion into a more general strength. It also lets him be more aggressive and protective, without trading in the servitude that has become central to his nature.
Also, the initial contract has to be sealed via kiss from either party to the other.
